Smart Medical Information Technology for Healthcare

The demand for efficient development of new treatment methods, pharmaceuticals and technologies in medicine is greater than ever. Data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence are opening up new opportunities for medical research based on healthcare data. The merging and analysis of medical data from different sources requires a high degree of data quality, interoperability, data protection and security as well as a consistent access process.

The Challenge

The establishment of data integration centres at the university medical sites ensures a uniform level of data quality and interoperability as well as the uniform connection of cross-location services and processes of SMITH-ServicePlatform (SSP). This platform (SSP) offers users access to various applications and services in the context of secondary data use, including the SMITH marketplace, which implements cross-site and shared use cases. Based on international standards, the necessary interoperability for distributed processes and distributed data storage is guaranteed.

Our contribution

The Fraunhofer ISST designs and develops interfaces and application-specific applications of the SMITH Service Platform.

The SMITH Marketplace mediates between data consumers and providers on the basis of various functions and is therefore primarily aimed at researchers, Use&Access Committees and project management bodies. A query designer allows easy modelling of criteria for cohort description and data selection. Feasibility studies, data usage requests and data provision are based on nationally coordinated processes. Further planned applications such as a patient portal and a project register portal create transparency for patients and other stakeholders.

Results

The SMITH Service Platform provides the necessary interfaces for the integration and connection of all data integration centres and thus services and use cases that apply equally to all data integration centres. The interfaces for the connection of data integration centres and use cases are based on international standards and allow scalability for specific locations and use cases. The SMITH Marketplace realizes a central access point for all actors of the Data Use&Access process.
