CCIT: Researching the industrial Internet of the future

The Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies CCIT researches cognitive technologies for the industrial Internet. Researchers in various disciplines are developing key technologies along the value chain, from sensors to intelligent learning methods in data processing to the cloud. CCIT helps companies with the forward-looking design of their business by opening up market access with cognitive solution services and products. These highly intelligent solutions and products are intended to maintain the competitiveness of German companies, boost their inattentiveness, and ensure their digital sovereignty.

The challenge

The industry is currently in the process of developing and gradually implementing solutions for the digital transformation in companies. The digitization and end-to-end networking of, among other things, machines and products but also logistics processes, purchasing, warehousing, and accounting harbors tremendous potential for improving processes and customizing products to tailor them to individual requirements. Simultaneously this is increasingly leading to systems of immense complexity that are almost impossible to control.

CCIT through domain-specific expert knowledge of each phase in the transformation process offers tailor-made cognitive solutions and provides assistance with the management of complexity. Support ranges from analysis to planning a forward-looking business strategy to agile technology development and testing in the CCIT’s numerous innovation and application centers.

Our contribution

Fraunhofer ISST heads the Fraunhofer Data Spaces research center (FDS), one of three centers within the CCIT. Within the CCIT framework, FDS focuses on the data infrastructure level and therefore forms the link between physical communication (see IOT-COMMS center) and the application layer (see Machine Learning center).

In the Data Spaces research center, we work on trusted data spaces for controllable collaboration between companies. This encompasses concepts for complex industrial data exchange networking scenarios as well as technologies for data sovereignty in value creation networks. A wide variety of use cases is examined here and implemented in cooperation with partners. The adaptation and transfer of International Data Spaces architecture components takes center stage.

Results

The long-term objective of the CCIT is to create a new Internet for industry by researching cognitive technologies. Key technologies along the value chain, from sensors to intelligent learning methods to the cloud, are intended to lead to highly intelligent solutions and products that keep companies competitive, make them more innovative, and safeguard their digital sovereignty.
