EnDaSpace PLATON - Platform Economy in the Application Context of Hydrogen

The project "EnDaSpace PLATON" is dedicated to the development of a platform-based ecosystem in the application context of the hydrogen economy in two subprojects. The technological sub-project "EnDaSpace Platform" focuses on the development of the digital platform for operating data of wind turbines and hydrogen electrolysers. In the sub-project "PLATON", central questions, requirements and opportunities of the platform economy for the hydrogen economy are being derived in parallel through investigation.

The challenge

In recent years, it has become clear that increasing digitalization is changing not only companies and their business models, but also entire value creation systems and industries. Traditional value chains and customer relationships are becoming ecosystems. Within these ecosystems, digital platforms in particular play an important role. Digital platforms are also a topic of the future in the energy industry, but only a few verified findings exist in connection with their design and their strategic management. Moreover, the impact of digital platforms on economic systems in general and industries and companies in particular has yet to be clearly demonstrated.

Our contribution

The project will develop a digital platform for operational and other relevant data for wind turbines based on FIWARE technologies using International Data Space connectors and demonstrate it in practice in conjunction with a hydrogen electrolyzer. It also further explores how the value of data can be assessed primarily in the context of platform-based business models and to what extent industry structures are transformed by the use of platforms.

Results

One of the results of the project is a catalog of selected cloud-based platforms and business models.  From this catalog, business model patterns can be derived to present a concept for platform business models, especially in the energy sector and the hydrogen economy. Furthermore, the project will make it much easier to integrate wind turbines into the International Data Space (IDS) and to regularly populate a FIWARE demonstration platform with wind energy data via IDS connectors.
