Institute

About us

Together with companies, the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST identifies the strategic value of their data and makes it usable - from data preparation to the development of new business models, the institute offers complete system solutions. In the four departments "Industrial Manufacturing", "Healthcare", "Mobility & Smart Cities" and "IT Service Providers", the scientists research the value of and confident handling of data in data spaces. They develop solutions for data management and the development of data architectures.

Fraunhofer ISST plays a leading role in strategic digital initiatives in Germany and Europe. Examples include the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) and Gaia-X, European Association for Data and Cloud AISBL, which aim to achieve cloud and data sovereignty and thus create the basis for a fair data economy in Germany and Europe. Fraunhofer ISST is also a central research partner in the Catena-X Automotive Network, a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection with around 100 million euros as part of the economic stimulus package.

Together with its customers and partners from industry and as an advisor to politicians, the institute is creating data spaces for the secure and controllable use of data across company boundaries - for Germany, Europe and worldwide.

Institute in numbers

At the end of 2022, Fraunhofer ISST employed 140 people (150 with the inclusion of graduate students). In addition to scientists and administrative staff, this also includes student employees and trainees, as the promotion and training of young scientists is one of the key tasks of a Fraunhofer Institute.

The Fraunhofer ISST is financed by public funds, so-called basic funding for conducting preliminary research, strategic projects and investments. The total expenditure of the operating budget amounted to around 9.632 million euros in 2022. 72 percent of this was accounted for by personnel costs.

In the 2022 financial year, Fraunhofer ISST had income from research and industry amounting to 10.250 million euros. In addition, there was institutional funding from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft amounting to 2.84 million euros.
