Future-oriented management of data as a company resource
In conjunction with digitization, the development of data-driven business models, and the emerging data ecosystems, the importance of data as a resource is growing and ultimately becoming a key competitive factor for companies. The objective of the DEMAND project – Data Economics and MANagement of Data-driven business – is to develop a fundamental structure for a future-oriented data management approach that helps companies effectively manage data as a resource.
The challenge
Companies face several challenges during the development of data-driven business processes, for which there are no currently usable approaches in line with practical requirements or corresponding information system support. This is because data of great variety (heterogeneity) have to be generated and processed in large volumes. The digital transformation is altering business models and markets for companies of all sizes in every industry. They all have to face this trend on a tactical and especially on a strategic level.
Our contribution
Fraunhofer ISST is the project consortium’s scientific partner. We determine the requirements, opportunities, and risks of companies in the data economy. Insights from the scientific community as well as practical experiences of the companies and from their use cases are incorporated into this process. From the analysis results, Fraunhofer ISST develops structured models and methods for implementing the effective future management of data as a company resource.
Results
The project produces concrete solutions for architectures, process models, and tools that can be used in practice. Blueprints for the required data governance and information architecture are developed on the basis of the International Data Spaces reference architecture, representing the basic structure of data management adapted to the new challenges. This is realized jointly with companies in concrete use cases (such as predictive maintenance, autonomous driving, and other IoT scenarios).
