Industrial Data Spaces Plus
Global digital networking is ongoing. This makes new business models, smart services, and innovative service offers possible. The secure exchange of data in value chains is a prerequisite. Meanwhile the calls for German and European solutions in the highly competitive market for industrial cloud-based solutions are getting ever louder. The International Data Spaces initiative (formerly Industrial Data Space) established under the auspices of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft enables open data marketplace for industry, used to securely exchange data between trusted partners.
The challenge
Companies are faced with a dilemma – on the one hand, exchanging data is una-voidable, but on the other hand, the company has to retain control over what hap-pens with the data. Because of this paradox, the topic of data sharing is still viewed with great skepticism and the potential of new business models is not being realized. To date there is no uniform architecture that permits the secure, standard-ized, and sovereign exchange of business data.
Our contribution
With responsibility for overall project management, the development of connectors, and configuration management as well as the economic examination of data as-sets, Fraunhofer ISST plays a leading role within the International Data Spaces initi-ative. The foundations for future business models in the developing data architec-ture are prepared, software components such as IDS connectors and configuration managers are developed, and the productization of data is analyzed by linking the various competencies.
Results
The research project’s outcome is not a product in the usual sense, but the devel-opment of a reference architecture model and its pilot testing. Results arising from this development include detailed specifications and concepts for dealing with the aforementioned challenges associated with the exchange of data between compa-nies and with data sovereignty. It serves as the starting point for the actual imple-mentation of consistently interoperable data spaces in various domains and use cases
