Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems EngineeringData Catalogs are technical solutions to manifest and drive data management and data governance in companies. To support the creation of data-driven products and services as well as the fulfillment of compliance requirements, the introduction of a Data Catalog was identified as a central element for the implementation of the data strategy. Fraunhofer ISST supports Dräger as a neutral partner during solution selection and implementation.
The challenge
In the course of the growing importance of data management, a large number of providers of Data Catalog solutions have entered the market in recent years. A research of Fraunhofer ISST in 2021 resulted in a set of about 60 solution providers, which differ strongly in the supported functional scope and possible integration into the existing system landscape. Accordingly, it is necessary to select the most suitable solution for the company's use cases to be supported, taking into account the central influencing factors such as the existing infrastructure and the costs incurred. A special role is played by the integration of stakeholders and future users, if possible at the beginning of the process.
Our performance
Fraunhofer ISST supports Dräger in the selection of a suitable Data Catalog solution, taking into account the integration into the existing enterprise architecture and governance. To this end, Fraunhofer ISST assumes the role of an independent and neutral intermediary. Existing resources of Fraunhofer ISST, such as the reference model for Data Catalogs, are used as a basis for the process. In addition, the network of Fraunhofer ISST can be used to gain potential "sparring partners" for the professional exchange in the area of Data Catalogs. In detail, Fraunhofer ISST is responsible for the recording and prioritization of the requirements, the pre-selection of potential providers and ensures the critical monitoring of the selection process including proof of concept.
