Dataspace Connector

The guardian of sovereign data exchange

The Dataspace Connector (DSC) is an open source software for sovereign data exchange. Even after the data has been exchanged, the data provider remains in control of what happens to the data. Based on the International Data Spaces reference architecture, the DSC enables the extension of data with guidelines and conditions and their processing. The DSC is a core component for building data spaces according to the DIN SPEC 27070 standard. The DSC is licensed under Apache 2.0. and is absolutely free for personal or commercial use.

The challenge

The sovereign exchange of data requires above all a trustworthy component that has the task of understanding, processing and ensuring the agreed conditions for data exchange. In order to implement this task within a data room, interoperability must be ensured in addition to trust. To this end, the participants must be able to network with each other and provide a door for data exchange within their own infrastructure: their identity ensures that the agreed message types are exchanged and that the terms of use are observed.

Your advantages

The Dataspace Connector is the gateway to sovereign data exchange and the creation of digital ecosystems:

  • International Data Spaces and data sovereignty at your fingertips
  • Open source software, free for personal and commercial use
  • Interoperable with the latest IDS version
  • Successfully tested and actively developed in various projects.

What we offer

  • Implementation of your use cases for internal and cross-company data exchange with data sovereignty - from the installation of a proof of concept (PoC) to a product-ready service offering
  • Development of new features or customizing the DSC component to your requirements
  • Training and hands-on introduction to the installation, operation and development of the Dataspace Connector for your IT.

The Dataspace Connector (DSC) enables organizations to easily get started with trusted data exchange using International Data Spaces (IDS) and GAIA-X. The implementation concept of the open source software has been successfully tested according to the certification criteria with "IDS-ready" of the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) in December 2020. Interested parties can view the source code directly via Github, use it and further develop it together with the community.

The architecture of the International Data Spaces (DIN SPEC 27070), which the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft played a major role in developing, is one of the key foundations of GAIA-X. The IDS Use Cases already show which solutions for industrial data exchange will be possible with GAIA-X. Fraunhofer is a founding member of the International Data Space Association and the GAIA-X Foundation, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Boris Otto has been appointed interim CTO of GAIA-X AISBL. The Dataspace Connector shown at HMI demonstrates the easy entry into the use of GAIA-X and IDS.

With the Mobility Data Space, an open data space is being created that will enable the development of real-time traffic data and sensitive mobility data in addition to secure exchange, and will network existing data platforms with one another. In this way, nationwide mobility data can be made available on a national level in the future.

Based on the decentralized system architecture of the International Data Spaces Association e. V., the Mobility Data Space offers an ecosystem in which data providers can define and control the conditions under which their data is used by other players. For this purpose, the Dataspace Connector is used for data exchange between all stakeholders. This creates data sovereignty and trust, and gives users certainty about the origin and quality of the data. By linking public and private sector data via regional and national data platforms, the Mobility Data Space becomes a digital distribution channel for data-driven business models and unfolds completely new possibilities for data development, linking and utilization.
