Cooperation between Boehringer Ingelheim and the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST in the Enterprise Lab began in 2016, with the objective of actively researching technologies and innovations in the pharmaceuticals field and furthering them in short, agile projects. Here the challenges arise from the day-to-day business at Boehringer Ingelheim. Topics, problems, and rough ideas are presented to the Fraunhofer ISST team, which then proposes innovative solutions and options for their implementation.
The challenges faced by a global enterprise such as Boehringer Ingelheim are varied. Fraunhofer ISST therefore contributes its expertise in many different areas. These include methods related to AI, big data, AR/VR, web development, and software development. Fraunhofer ISST creates solutions from a single source. Proposed solutions are conceived based on the latest scientific insights, and the underlying (possible) business models are analyzed and implemented within the collaboration framework. Up to three employees, who rotate depending on the required expertise in the project sprints, are available to Boehringer Ingelheim.
Fraunhofer ISST has already developed numerous innovations for Boehringer Ingelheim within the project framework. These range from visible results, such as automated illness detection using AI-based analysis, to innovations “under the hood” through the optimization and automation of data management tasks, for example regarding data quality and transparency.
New business models, digital devices, software, and digital processes based on the latest scientific insights are the results that find their way from research directly into human and veterinary medicine through the Enterprise Lab.
