Beacons periodically transmit their identification via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Originally, Beacons were developed as iBeacons by Apple to supply customers in the trade at the point-of-sale on their iPhone with information and offers via a corresponding app. Nowadays Beacons are increasingly used for real-time location services in other application areas. In addition, the technical development of Beacons to autonomous sensor platforms opens up further application possibilities. The associated market potential will result in an increasing number of suppliers with an even greater number of Beacon variants.
As Beacons' identification code, transmission interval and signal strength can be individually set, commercial providers of Beacons usually also offer software for the management of Beacons. The offer ranges from simple apps for parameterizing a Beacon to fleet management and campaign management.
In order to support potential users in the use of Beacons to digitize their processes, we have initiated the Beacon Center which…traces the market development,
- tests the Beacon technology,
- evaluates the possible applications of Beacons,
- supports users in the selection,
- demonstrates Beacon applications.
