Completed Projects of Digitization in Logistics

EffizienzCluster Logistik Ruhr

Background Information: »EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr«

In February 2010, the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr won the top cluster competition of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Since this award, the consortium has been regarded as the top cluster for innovative design of high-quality and efficient logistics services. With a funding volume of 40 million euros, it is the largest research and development cluster in logistics to date.

Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster »Cloud Computing for Logistics«

The logistics of tomorrow are more difficult to predict than the weather. Internet and e-commerce provide more than a hundred million additional packages in Germany per year. Each of these packages is ordered, picked, packed, transported, distributed and delivered individually and on demand. At the same time, the number of articles increases exponentially due to more and more individual design. The flexibility and dynamism of logistical process design has now reached a level that can no longer be achieved by conventional organizational forms and is only to be handled on the basis of efficient IT solutions: logistics move things and the software determines where things are and how, from where and whereabouts they move.

Logistics Mall

As part of the innovation cluster "Cloud Computing for Logistics", the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST develops together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML, a new generation of logistics IT support. Through close cooperation and the combined use of logistics and IT know-how a service-oriented platform is developed: the Logistics Mall.

Service Design Studio

»Service Design Studio« connects BMBF Leading-Edge Cluster »EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr« with the »Logistics Mall«

The efficiency cluster called »LogistikRuhr« won on January 26, 2010 the leading-edge-cluster competition of the federal government. In this way, the consortium under the leadership of the Fraunhofer IML will receive within the next five years funds amounting to approximately 40 million euros. The Fraunhofer ISST will concentrate on the leading topic »Logistics-as-a-Service« and will create for the cluster a »Service Design Studio« based on cloud-computing technology.
