InDaSpacePlus – Industrial Data Spaces Plus

Global digital networking is ongoing. This makes new business models, smart services, and innovative service offers possible. The secure exchange of data in value chains is a prerequisite. Meanwhile the calls for German and European solutions in the highly competitive market for industrial cloud-based solutions are getting ever louder. The International Data Spaces initiative (formerly Industrial Data Space) established under the auspices of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft enables open data marketplace for industry, used to securely exchange data between trusted partners.

The challenge

Companies are faced with a dilemma – on the one hand, exchanging data is unavoidable, but on the other hand, the company has to retain control over what happens with the data. Because of this paradox, the topic of data sharing is still viewed with great skepticism and the potential of new business models is not being realized. To date there is no uniform architecture that permits the secure, standardized, and sovereign exchange of business data.

Our contribution

The Fraunhofer Institute is developing International Data Spaces in cooperation with users as a data space for the secure and sovereign exchange of data. Rather than a central data pool, the IDS architecture is based on a decentralized approach. Data stay in the company and are exchanged according to common rules. This ensures data sovereignty. ISST is pursuing the further development of the reference archi-tecture and various reference components within the project framework, transferring the research results to productive use in cooperation with the user group.

Results

The research project’s outcome is not a product in the usual sense, but the devel-opment of a reference architecture model and its pilot testing. Results arising from this development include detailed specifications and concepts for dealing with the aforementioned challenges associated with the exchange of data between compa-nies and with data sovereignty. It serves as the starting point for the actual imple-mentation of consistently interoperable data spaces in various domains and use cases.
