Innovation ecosystem at the Dortmund scientific site
Scientific institutions based in Dortmund that – on their own – are already shaping and driving logistics research today are working together under the umbrella of the High Performance Center Logistics and IT. In the High Performance Center, they are now establishing a national infrastructure and innovation ecosystem in cooperation with industry, not only together but synergetically – from fundamental research to applied research.
The challenge
The High Performance Center Logistics and IT is working on the ongoing establishment of logistics as a scientific discipline – in particular the specialist core of logistics. At the same time, the participating institutions want to transfer logistics principles to the handling of information, thereby strengthening it in terms of information logistics.
Our Contribution
Fraunhofer ISST is represented in the High Performance Center with its three busi-ness units – Logistics, Data Economy, and Healthcare – and deals with the optimi-zation of vertical and cross-company information flows. From the perspective of data ecosystems, governance models are created as basic prerequisites for the sovereign handling of data, and therefore also for data-based value creation. What are known as digital twins permit the integration of various data sources, enabling a digital representation of a physical object or process throughout its entire life cycle. A "Shared Digital Twin" demonstrator is also being developed in the project, ena-bling the integration and use of data external to the company. Where a sector stands regarding digitization is worked out by developing maturity models, mainly using healthcare as an example.
Results
The High Performance Center delivers state-of-the-art research at the touch point between logistics and IT. As one of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s currently 17 High Performance Centers in Germany, it bundles science and research at the Dortmund site. We promote networking in the scientific community. We stand for research excellence – with the development and application of the latest technologies, from science to industry.
