Digital Product Passport

Digital Product Passports for the industrial circular economy

Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are designed to create transparency regarding the materials, origin, and sustainability of physical products. Starting in 2027, the first DPPs will become mandatory in the EU. The project aims to develop an open and interoperable solution that enables companies to easily enter the digital circular economy – independent of existing ecosystems and based on open-source technologies.

The Challenge

With the introduction of the Digital Product Passport, industry faces a major challenge: there are currently no uniform standards or proven solutions that work across sectors. Information on product composition, repairability, or recyclability is often not digitally available or difficult to access. Integration into existing production processes also remains unclear. Without interoperable approaches, companies along the value chain cannot exchange standardized data – a key obstacle to circularity and resource efficiency.

Our Service

Within the project, Fraunhofer ISST has developed a generic, functional demonstrator solution for the Digital Product Passport. The solution is based on open-source software (Eclipse BaSyx) and uses the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) as the digital representation of the product. The demonstrator operates independently of existing ecosystems and can be flexibly integrated into various use cases. Through a QR code, DPPs can be accessed via mobile devices. The architecture also enables connection to Data Spaces – ensuring secure and interoperable data exchange along the value chain.

The Result

The developed demonstrator provides a practical, open DPP solution that is easy to use and transferable across industries. It enables standardized data exchange and offers companies a flexible foundation to meet future European regulatory requirements. With this, Fraunhofer ISST contributes to advancing the industrial circular economy and driving the digital transformation of sustainable value creation.
