The challenge
Europe’s cloud and edge market is dominated by a few non-European hyperscalers. This dependency jeopardizes the technological sovereignty, data protection, and innovative strength of European companies. At the same time, new regulations such as the EU Data Act and increasing sustainability requirements demand flexible and auditable architectures. Proprietary interfaces, manual processes, and a lack of automated security solutions further complicate integration, scalability, and compliance.
Our services
Fraunhofer’s contribution to “ApeiroRA” focuses on developing technologies that will strengthen the European cloud and edge market in the long term:
- Flexibility and interoperability: Building modular systems for cloud and edge services that operate seamlessly across different providers and applications.
- Security and compliance: Implementation of state-of-the-art security strategies such as Zero Trust and Confidential Computing to ensure data protection and regulatory compliance.
- Resource efficiency: Use of digital twins to optimize resource consumption and enable sustainable IT configurations.
- AI-based support: Developing autonomous error analysis and AI-supported operations management to reduce administrative overhead and increase efficiency.
The result
The project results will lead to a robust and interoperable edge-cloud reference architecture, which will be made available as open source on NeoNephos. This strengthens Europe’s digital sovereignty in the long term and offers companies future-proof solutions for their IT infrastructures and data management.
