Geo Data Space Germany

Geo Data Space Germany is a national geodata space developed by the data analytics institute (dai) and Fraunhofer ISST. It consolidates and harmonizes all relevant geodata—from 3D building data and road networks to cadastral information—into a unified model. This data serves as a foundational infrastructure to support domain-specific data spaces, such as those for the energy sector or disaster management.

The Challenge  

Geo Data Space Germany faces the demanding task of harmonizing previously fragmented geodata from various sources—such as federal states and municipalities—into a unified format. This requires innovative technological approaches, consideration of ethical aspects, and legal coordination. The key added value lies in simplifying access to geodata through a standardized interface.

 

Our Services  

Fraunhofer ISST is developing a prototype data trustee for the trustworthy sharing of geodata within Geo Data Space Germany. To this end, a Minimum Viable Data Space (MVD) based on the Eclipse Dataspace Components is being used to establish an initial data space. The minimum data space is set up and tested using identity and trust management as well as connectors for all stakeholders.

 

The Result 

The result of the project is a Minimum Viable Data Space (MVD) consisting of connectors for data providers, data users, and data trustees. The functional prototype integrates an identity and trust management system that enables the secure and trustworthy sharing of geodata. The scope of work also includes documented requirements, a legal assessment, and the definition of value-added services.
