The Challenge
The completion of the joint project does not mark the end of the transformation to a data-driven company. The introduction of a data governance organization is a milestone on which KSB will continue to build. The results generated in the project are the cornerstone for the use of data as a strategic resource. They will also contribute to the success of another major KSB project in the coming years: the introduction of SAP S/4HANA.
Our Service
KSB considers data to be a strategic resource for the global design of future-oriented business processes and data-based business models. Within the scope of the project, the following areas of action were therefore prioritized:
- Data strategy: This forms the basis for handling data. The data strategy supports the business strategy and affects the entire company.
- Data domains and roles: The implementation of the data governance concept is ensured by company-specific data domains. A role concept is established in each data domain, which takes into account the tasks, expertise, and responsibilities involved in handling data.
- Data governance organization: In addition to the data domains, a customized organizational structure clarifies the responsibilities and accountabilities at all relevant company levels, from general management to the operational level. To ensure the long-term success of data governance in the company, the Data Governance Office was established as a core element of the data governance organization.
- Data culture: Data culture deals with the values, beliefs, and feelings of employees when handling company data. It considers the entire data lifecycle, from initial creation to use and deletion. Targeted communication measures and workshops have raised awareness of the importance of data within the company as a whole.
The Result
The joint project has resulted in the creation of sustainable and efficient data governance, which the company is using to further operationalize its globally oriented data strategy. The excellent cooperation over the past few years has also resulted in a doctoral scholarship funded by KSB on the topic of data culture at the Graduate School of Logistics at TU Dortmund University. In short, the collaboration has been a complete success – both for KSB, which now regards data as a strategic resource and manages it accordingly, and for the employees of our institute, who are able to transfer their knowledge of theoretical concepts into real-world applications. KSB and Fraunhofer ISST will continue to maintain a constructive exchange in an agile environment even after the project has ended.
