Data Driven Solutions

Full support for the introduction and use of data-driven solutions

Fluctuating demand, volatile supply chains, secure data exchange, regulatory requirements, compliance, and many other challenges are keeping industry busy. Due to time pressure, complexity, and staff shortages, many of these challenges can no longer be solved manually. This is where the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST comes in, developing data-driven solutions.

With many years of experience in problem identification, design, and development of tailor-made, future-oriented solutions, the Industrial Manufacturing department at Fraunhofer ISST supports industry – from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to large corporations. The focus is on organizational and technical issues in the context of digitalization, which are examined jointly in training, analysis, and implementation projects. As a research institute, Fraunhofer ISST combines research-driven innovation and neutrality by combining proven solutions with new innovations. The aim is to strengthen the competitiveness of companies in the long term through data-driven digitalization solutions.

Our range of services includes the following solutions:

Introduction of Digital Product Passports (DPP)

We offer comprehensive support to ensure compliance with new regulatory requirements (e.g., Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation or Supply Chain Act) and product traceability in the supply chain. We accompany you from the initial consultation, which takes legal and technical aspects into account, to the successful design of industry-specific solutions that address your individual challenges. In addition, we show you how you can use your data for further use cases and reuse the collected data to increase your efficiency, for example.

Digital sovereignty and traceability in data exchange

The "Invisible Wartermarking (Innamark)" ecosystem can be used to protect intellectual property and implement data ownership. Innamark relies on digital watermarks and steganography, allowing metadata to be embedded in the data to be exchanged and checked independently of the system. This allows you to retain control of your data even after sharing it with external partners.

Decision support through digital twins (DT)

To address the challenges of planning and controlling production and logistics systems, Fraunhofer ISST has developed the open source digital twin framework “Open Factory Twin (OFacT)” in collaboration with other partners. Based on this framework, planning and control decisions can be evaluated by analyzing “what-if scenarios.” The use of AI and ML tools reduces manual integration and maintenance efforts and improves decision-making quality.

Digitalization of production and logistics systems

In addition to specific applications, we advise our partners on the operational and strategic introduction of new technologies such as large language models (LLM) and free and open source software (FOSS). For example, we use training courses, system analyses, and prototypes to demonstrate possible applications in the context of production and logistics and address specific problems and potential from a domain perspective. We also provide technical consulting on software architecture based on common standards such as TOGAF and arc42, as well as prototype development.
