Europe aims to expand its own digital infrastructure and AI computing capacities—but in many places, power connections and grid capacities are becoming bottlenecks. The Fraunhofer IUK Technology Group and T-Systems International are therefore developing a solution for dynamic energy management as part of the IPCEI-CIS project “Dynamic Energy Management for Data Center Flexibility,” which controls computing loads over time and space based on energy availability, costs, and grid compatibility. In this way, data centers can eventually transition from being passive large-scale consumers to serving as a flexibility resource within the power system. Technical and regulatory requirements, as well as potential business models, will be outlined in a white paper by the end of 2026.

Removing Corporate Data from AI Models

    Press release / April 01, 2026

The development of AI models in joint projects yields improved results because multiple companies contribute their data. The situation becomes critical, however, if a partner withdraws and requests the return of its data. With federated unlearning, Fraunhofer researchers and Fujitsu Research have developed a method for precisely removing data from decentralized AI models.

“AI in New Product Development: Connecting Data and Unlocking Knowledge”

    Press release / November 05, 2025

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is redefining how products are conceived, designed, and brought to market. In a comprehensive joint study, Accenture, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), and the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST explore how AI can accelerate and transform new product development. The white paper outlines a scalable framework for the adoption of AI across engineering domains and disciplines, bridging the gap between isolated pilots and enterprise-wide transformation.

Berlin, October 13, 2025 – For the first time, public and private media companies are working together on the future of digital media infrastructure. With ARD, ZDF, RTL Deutschland, ProSiebenSat.1, and the German Press Agency (dpa), some of the most important German media houses are involved in the launch of the initiative. Together, they will develop the technical and organizational foundations for a sovereign, national media data infrastructure by autumn 2025. A decision will then be made as to whether a national “Media Data Space” will be permanently established from 2026 onwards. The project is coordinated by MISSION KI. The team is supported by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media, the co-initiators of the “Beyond Platforms Initiative,” and the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST.

The future of industrial value creation: Comprehensive recycling of resources, customer-centric ecosystems, autonomous technologies, and a central role for humans

    Press release / September 03, 2025

Highly complex, dynamic, and interconnected: Industrial value creation systems are facing profound change shaped by technological innovations, geopolitical shifts, and societal and sustainability expectations. But what does this mean for the industry of tomorrow? Together with twelve companies from the manufacturing industry, the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST and the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO designed an industrial value creation system of the future in a future workshop. The results have now been published in the report “The Future of Industrial Value Creation Systems – The Perspective of German Industrial Companies.”
